Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting career. This path was fraught with difficulties. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she found it difficult to get opportunities on stage. She then worked as an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. It was there that she made a buck in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
